qWave is developing a downhole technology that uses focused acoustic shockwaves to investigate the mechanical properties of rock formations deep inside a well.
For this project, I created a 3D animation that visualizes the qWave tool and explains how the technology operates inside a wellbore. The challenge was to communicate a highly technical process in a way that is visually clear and understandable, while maintaining the accuracy and physical scale of the system.
The animation combines detailed 3D product visualization with technical storytelling, showing the tool being deployed into the well and demonstrating how focused acoustic energy interacts with the surrounding rock formation.
qWave needed a clear visual explanation of a complex downhole technology.
The system combines mechanical components, high-voltage electronics, hydraulics and acoustic energy inside a compact tool designed to operate in demanding underground environments.
The animation needed to make this technology understandable without relying on complex technical drawings or specialist knowledge.
I created a detailed 3D visualization of the qWave downhole tool and its operation inside a well.
The animation uses cutaway views, technical close-ups and procedural motion to reveal what happens inside the tool and around the wellbore.
By combining realistic materials with simplified technical visualization, the animation makes the invisible processes—such as the generation and propagation of acoustic shockwaves—visible to the viewer.
A technical 3D animation created to explain qWave’s downhole technology and in-situ stress testing process.
